THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS STORY
Nothing was coming out of my wife than the carbon dioxide she was exhaling. We stared at each other for a little while as the phone rang on. before I could pick up the call, it ended. The lawyer was as speechless as we were, so she had to put on her garment of patience; she had no choice, it should be assumed to be a matter of life and death by the way Neche and I reacted to the call.
Before any of us in the room could blink an eye, my phone started to ring again. What I saw in Neche's eyes was the anxiousness to pick the call; that was the same thing I saw in her eyes when I got to the hospital where her mother died. The anxiousness grew bigger when the doctor came out of the theater with a disappointing face, she converted every feeling in her that moment into tears. I know Neche too well, she is very soft at heart, and little things could weigh her down.
Neche became unease all of a sudden. She knew we seldom received calls from Kamsi's proprietress, and that most of the calls had been from the school's Admin.
I once told her about the Parents-Teacher Association meeting I attended when she couldn't make it due to some official assignments with her former employees. The proprietress made sure that every parent in attendance stored her number in their phone in case of any emergency. So it was believed that calls from the school weren't attached to life and death, but from the proprietress was.

The anxiousness grew bigger when the doctor came out of the theater with a disappointing face, she converted every feeling in her that moment into tears. I know Neche too well, she is very soft at heart, and little things could weigh her down.
I picked up almost immediately the phone started to ring again. I stopped breathing so I could hear the caller clearly while my eyes were fixed to Neche's. My reaction obviously exposed that all wasn't well. I asked so many "whys" "hows" and "wheres" almost stammering. Neche on the other hand was so restless that she screamed out.
"What is wrong with her!"
"Baby calm down, she will be fine. It's a minor." I covered the mouthpiece of the phone, then back to the caller.
Neche couldn't hold her peace by seating down, she stood and started pacing in the lawyer's office with quick short steps. Within seconds, I was done.
"Baby, let's go. She is in the school's clinic" I stood up impatiently.
Neche dashed out even before I finished the sentence. But I turned to the lawyer with a face of apology.
"Please, we shall call to reschedule this meeting." I'm sure she observed as I talk in an apologetic tone. But before she reacted to my statement, I left her office in a hurry.
I ran so fast not to keep Neche waiting at all. Thank heavens, I was right on time.
I couldn't look at Neche's face as I drove, not even a trace of a smile was seen on her face. I wanted to say at least a word to her, but kept losing the guts to make any utterance. So I laid my sight on her laps. they were still smooth and inviting especially as she wore the short skirt that exposed them the more. Something always told me that she was smiling at me whenever my gaze was on her laps, maybe that was my wish. We'd sat like that more than a million times before, and she knew how much I love to see her on skirts that are a little bit higher above her knees, because I never failed to compliment how sexy and gorgeous she looked in them. She would always smile and then kiss me passionately before saying "thank you" under her breath.
The silence in my jeep was killing me. Inasmuch as our daughter's life was on the line, our marriage was in a worse dilemma, and that was what I cared more for. I told myself that I had to play the role of the man of the house which I was; maybe used to be.
"Baby..." I began. ..."We gonna scale through all these soon, I promise."
I looked at her confidently for the first on our way to the clinic, but she pretended not to hear me. it didn't bother me because I'd seen more of that for the past few days.
"But we can't fight this separately, we..."
"Oh please, Buchi, save me all these weightless words of yours! You should know by now that they don't get to me no more. Just drive us to the clinic, that's all that matters right now. But if you think that I'm going to sit here and watch you preach what you don't practice, then you lie!" Her voice echoed like it came from the speakers.
I swerved sharply to the right and applied the brake to a halt close to a busy roundabout.
"Jesus! Buchi what?"
"What is wrong with you!" I turned and faced her as she was still getting herself from the little shock. "I'm trying to make us work again! Is it about who is wrong now? Yes! I am! I am wrong! What part of it don't you understand. Why making things hard for me? Please pity me I beg, forgive me." Cloud of tears began to gather in my eyes. "I swear with my life that I will make it up..." Tears trickled down now.
"Buchi, Kamsi is in the hospital, just take me to her."
"Without us, Kamsi will suffer emotionally!"
"Not with me." She unfastened the seat-belt and then opened the car door in a hurry.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to take a cab."
I unfastened the seat-belt that glued me to my seat as quickly as I could to double-cross her. My knees touched the ground even before I got to where she was, she tried dodging me but to no avail. Our dramatic display drew attention that we became the center of attraction.
"Buchi, please stop, people are looking at us." She started to sob.
I couldn't hold back the tears in my eyes. I cried and begged her to reconsider staying back. Even the devil at that instance would believe that I truly loved my wife especially when people started having pity on me, begging my wife from a distance to reconsider. We heard their voices faintly but were more focused on ourselves. When I noticed that she was trying to pull me up, I stood up immediately and we hugged passionately. She hid her face on my chest as we hugged.
Something within me told me that I was half way through achieving reconciliation. I felt a niggling joy which erupted from my belly as I opened the car door for her. I hurried
into the car and zoomed off to the school clinic immediately I ignited the car engine.
